The "Great" Escape...

News related to stampedes would always make me wonder, How can someone possibly die in a stampede? What is so great about a stampede? How does it take so many lives? Never having witnessed any, I always had the same views until a few days ago.For that I'd have to roll back in time to 17th October 2008 which was the Star Night in our college fest, Aranya '08. The famous band, Jal was to perform in our college and I'm a big fan of Jal. As expected I arrived there early to get the best possible position. The crowd continued to come in, my estimate would be around 9000 people. And with the mighty force of the crowd wanting to come ahead, the barriers began to fall. Policemen and Guards came to the rescue as they lathi charged (I still can't believe they did that. We're just students, you can't be that harsh !!) us and took control of the situation. Another push from the crowd and the lights came down. The whole metallic structure carrying the lights for the stage came down right in the middle of the VIP seating (fortunately nobody was sitting there). A lady had a close escape amazingly right in front of the lights. I thought it was all over, there would be no Jal but then we were rescued as the police Lathi charged with anger now and made the whole crowd sit in a few minutes.

The next situation is that we are sitting down and attending a music concert (You really need to Laugh-Out-Loud this time). As the band came in, it was a matter of time before the crowd was on the feet again. Then a lot of pushing and shoving, backs pressing, people yelling, and lovely music in the background. The biggest mistake I made was to try and advance to get a better vantage point. Next, I get caught in between big, strong people and am pushed here and there. I felt claustrophobic out there. I'm still watching Jal perform but I'm not in a very comfortable position out here. I'm constantly pushed around just like everyone else and its total chaos out there. Suddenly, I see a number of people in a line going down. But before I realized I was part of the same line, I was already down. Being down is much much worse then being pushed around above. You have the fear of being crumpled to death or breaking a bone or something bizarre. I'm in a half lying down position, with my legs on the floor and my upper body vertical. My legs felt pain with a number of bodies lying on top of me, my approximation would be around 4. I wanted to scream as loud as possible, so that someone could hear me. I did scream but nobody could hear me. It was all in vain as there was no response from anyone above. While moving my hands on the floor trying to free my legs, I learnt that there was another guy right below me, I was sitting on top of him. Momentarily I felt sorry for him but soon I said to myself, "I need to get out of this situation myself" and "I am no better than he is at the moment". Selfishly, I stretched my hands up looking for help of any sort. Nobody bothered to look down. The thought of being walked upon and suffocated to death struck me. I had a sinking feeling which I hate to recall. I wanted to get out of there anyhow. I pushed my legs hard, with all my force, took support from other bodies and pushed. To my surprise my legs were out miraculously. But, my shoes weren't out, only my legs were. Pushing against the body below me, I stood up. It felt so good being on my feet again but I again had the fear of being stepped upon as I wasn't wearing any shoes. After a while I found one shoe. Somehow I managed my way right in front of the railing, metres away from the stage. I was so happy getting to see Jal from so close. I sat there and saw about 3 songs before the song titled "Dil Haray" came, where they told everyone to take out their cell phones and switch on the light and wave them up in the air. It was dark (lights were switched off) and the song was a slow one, so it gave a nice effect. This made everyone stand up and again the same situation. I had decided I wasn't going to experience that situation again. I made my way towards the railing, jumped over and walked out with one shoe in my right leg. After the show, I went back to get my shoe. Though I got it easily, I saw the ground had lots of shoes lying as such. A maddening experience for me, a really close one, learnt a lot from it.

Euro 2008 - A roundup

This summer kicked off with the UEFA Euro 2008 co-hosted by Austria-Switzerland. Providing a daily entertainment of two matches, it was loaded with surprises. Who's going to win today? Spain? Netherlands? France? Greece? None were guaranteed a win. Not even elite title contenders like Italy, France and many more. After all its the Euro 2008, the next most popular event after the World Cup. The first major upset was in the qualifying rounds with England failing to qualify. The Group of death, Group C was quite entertaining. The tournament kicked off at Basel on 7th June. Will be closing on 29th June with the Final at the capital city of Austria. Don’t miss it. In the following few sections I will be discussing and sharing my views on the performances, players, coaches and stuff related to the first 15 days of the Euro 2008 championship.

Group A

Group A didn't have much to see and predict. The expectations were that Portugal and Czech would go through.

Surprisingly, Czech Republic failed to make it yet again. That is a series of poor displays. Recalling the 2006 World Cup failure with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ghana, it wasn't the first time that Czech Rep. had failed to make it through to the Quarter Finals. In spite of having a strong line-up and positioned well in the football world. But, this year was different; they started good with a win over Switzerland. Portugal sunk them 3-1 but that was much expected. They were all set to qualify after taking a 2-1 lead against Turkey in the last match. Nihat Kahveci tore the Czech's apart with 2 goals in a span of 3 minutes just minutes before full time to deliver the Czechs a complete turnaround. Petr Cech, one of the best in the business was completely broken after a blunder that let in the equaliser from Nihat. There was still more action to follow as the Turkish keeper was sent off for shoving Koller. Anyways, it was too late. That was the end of the Czech.

Portugal were always certain, best in the group, one of the title contenders and had the sensational RONALDO. They were also the first team to book a place in the quarter-finals, (After all, they were in the first group :) and had played more matches than all other teams).

Switzerland being the host team didn't do much except the saving grace that was a win against a second string Portugal. Hakan Yakin was their performer for the day with two goals in 7 minutes to sign off with a victory.

Turkey is the team to watch-out. With scintillating displays against the Czechs and later the Croatians as well, they have emerged as the surprise package of the tournament just like Greece at the 2004 championship. Hats off to their never-say-die attitude against both the teams and the way they held their nerves to take away the penalty shoot-out. The Croats had taken the lead with a thumping header from Klasnic with a minute to spare in the over-time period. That was it, they thought but fell prey just like Czech. Their super-sub, Semih Senturk had surely saved them right in the last minute. The Croatians were demoralized and under a lot of pressure and that was obvious. The penalties and they just couldn't seem to find the target. Rustu took the Turks into the semis and for the first time in the history. Watch out for Turkey as they get ready for the semi-final against Germany on 25th. Its NOW or NEVER. Basel awaits its last match for the tournament.

Rain Pain

While the rains brought joy to so many throughout the country, it did not prove as loving for some. Here, I bring you some exclusive images.

This tall Eucalyptus tree fell down across the road causing huge damage to cars and the Colony Wall in Greater Kailash-I at New Delhi. Thanks to the wall, the tree came down on the cars rather than the house, thus averting an unimaginable situation. Looking carefully, one can notice that the Metallic red Ford Ikon completely shattered. Nothing was left of it later.

Bringing you another image showing what the wall did with this Maruti Wagon-R.

The tree hit the wall causing it to fall on this Wagon-R thus destroying the windows coupled with a few dents.

The simliarity in the two cars - The colour RED
The tree did touch a few more cars (The tree was really really long) but no other car was damaged (They weren't Red). Mysterious!!
